Understanding Disc Filters: Disc filters are advanced filtration systems that use a series of pods containing pneumatically clamped disc-shaped filter elements to remove particles from water or wastewater. The discs are a lightweight three-dimensional molded polypropylene media, that create a tortuous path when clamped together.

During operation, water flows towards the center of the filter media disc stack. Solids are captured within the tortuous path formed when the discs are clamped together.  When the filter becomes loaded with particles, a cleaning cycle is initiated; the pneumatic clamp is released allowing the disks to separate, and a series of water-jets in the center column blast the accumulated solids off the surface of the disc and out to drain.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is a disc filter, and how does it work?

A disc filter is a type of filtration system that removes solids from liquids using a stack of plastic discs with intersecting grooves that create fine filtration pathways. As liquid flows through the compressed discs, particles are trapped, and clean liquid exits. Over time, as particles accumulate and pressure rises, the filter undergoes an automatic backwash process where the flow is reversed, the discs are loosened, and trapped particles are flushed out.

2. What are the advantages of disc filters?

Pureworld Solutions, Inc. offers expert consultation to assess your filtration requirements, recommend the most suitable disc filter solutions, and provide comprehensive support from selection to installation and maintenance.

3. How do I choose the right disc filter for my application?

Selection depends on factors such as flow rate, particle size distribution, desired effluent quality, available space, and specific industry requirements. Consult with a filtration expert at (604) 878-8092 to determine the best solution for your needs.

4. What types of filter media are used in disc filters?

The filter media of disc filter primarily consists of grooved plastic discs made from materials such as polypropylene or nylon. These materials are chosen for their durability, chemical resistance, and ability to withstand the pressures and conditions of various filtration processes.

5. How often does a disc filter need maintenance?

While disc filters are designed for automatic operation, regular inspections are recommended. Typically, a thorough inspection every 3-6 months is sufficient, with more frequent checks in demanding applications.

6. Can disc filters be customized for specific applications?

Yes, disc filters can be customized in terms of disc size, number of discs, filtration degree, and materials of construction to suit specific application requirements.

7. What factors affect the performance of a disc filter?

Key factors include influent quality, flow rate, solids loading, filter media characteristics, backwash frequency and efficiency, and overall system design.

8. How do disc filters compare to other types of filtration systems?

Disc filters often offer advantages in terms of space efficiency, low head loss, and high dirt-holding capacity compared to traditional sand filters or cartridge filters.

9. Can disc filters handle varying influent qualities?

Many disc filters are designed to handle fluctuations in influent quality. However, extreme variations may require additional pre-treatment or system adjustments.

10. How can Pureworld Solutions, Inc. help with my disc filter needs?

Pureworld Solutions, Inc. offers expert consultation to assess your filtration requirements, recommend the most suitable disc filter solutions, and provide comprehensive support from selection to installation and maintenance.
