Pulp & Paper

Clean water and effective wastewater treatment are critical for the pulp and paper industry, which is one of the largest water users and wastewater producers in the manufacturing sector. The production of paper involves multiple stages, such as pulping, bleaching, and finishing, which require large quantities of water and produce significant amounts of wastewater.

Solutions we offer:
  • As the water source is often surface water from a lake or river, it is paramount that the water is screened to prevent biologicals, particulate, fish, fish-eggs, and other debris from being pulled into the water system.
  • Self-cleaning filters and strainers ensure that process and seal water is kept clean and free of fine contaminants.
  • The Chlorine Dioxide production system is particularly sensitive to organics and debris, which need to be filtered out of water and chemicals to prevent explosions within the reactor.
  • Digesters work best when fed with Wood Chips of a uniform size, so large multi-deck woodyard screens are designed to remove rocks, pins and fines before the chips are sent to the Chip Silo.
  • After the chip has been chemically digested and the chip has been broken down into individual fibres, it is important to screen the fibre stock to ensure that only fibres of the correct length are accepted, and any uncooked wood fibres (shives) are rejected and sent back for reprocessing.
  • When the fibres are sent to the machine, polymers, starches and other additives are added to the stock to create the desired properties of the finished sheet. These additives must be filtered to ensure that there areno globs of incorrectly mixed material sent onto the paper sheet, as this would produce an off-spec end product.
  • Pulp and Paper mills have multiple wet and dry chemical make-down and feed systems, where accuracy and repeatability is paramount.
  • Sludges can be dewatered to reduce the volume of water in the material prior to being burned in the power boiler.
  • On-site oxygen generators provide a lower cost, constant source ofoxygen without bringing in tankers of Liquid Oxygen.
  • Algae growing in ponds or water storage tanks can cause odour issues or be be pulled into process water where it can cause process upsets, or a poor quality final product.
  • The chemicals used in pulp mills often smell unpleasant, or are corrosive. Adsorptive media can be used to oxidize corrosive gasses, and remove smells.
  • Proper filtration and treatment of Cooling Tower water increases the overall efficiency of the system, reduces the amount of biocide required, and removes the bacteria that cause Legionnaires Disease.
